Hydration cheatsheet

Water is the difference between lush or tired.

Set a daily reminder and keep the stand like a vase: clean water and steady levels.

  • Nordmann Firs can drink over 2 litres in the first 24 hours, so refill as soon as the level drops.
  • Use room-temperature water because icy water can shock the vascular system.
  • Additives are optional, but clean fresh water remains the most reliable approach.

prepping

Prep at the farm

+

Trim and measure before heading home.

  • We cut every tree fresh with a clean 2–3cm base so it starts drinking as soon as it is in water.
  • Measure ceiling height and clear a 30cm buffer for stands or toppers before choosing your tree.
  • Transport with the trunk forward and a blanket beneath to prevent wind burn on the needles.

arrival

First 24 hours

+

Re-cut the base, saturate, and acclimatise.

  • Make a fresh 2–3cm cut using a handsaw, then immediately place the trunk into water.
  • Use a reservoir stand that holds at least 3 litres; most Nordmann Firs drink 1–2 litres the first day.
  • Leave the tree in a cool outbuilding for a few hours before bringing it into a heated room.

placement

Find the right spot

+

Keep it cool, bright, and away from drafts.

  • Position at least 1 metre from radiators, fireplaces, or underfloor heating vents.
  • Allow 15cm behind the tree for airflow and to prevent wall marks from branches.
  • Choose LED lights which run cool and secure the stand so the water surface stays level.

weekly

Weekly rhythm

+

Water, rotate, and tidy lightly.

  • Check water morning and evening; never let the reservoir fall below the trunk base.
  • Rotate the tree a quarter turn every few days to keep growth and light exposure even.
  • Mist lightly once or twice a week if your home is particularly dry.
